Croissants

Where did the croissant come from?

This quintessential French pastry was actually born in an Austrian bakery in Paris before it became the iconic member of the viennoiseries--a group of French baked goods meaning “things from Vienna.” Viennoiseries have a rather flaky texture similar to that of puff pastry. Other viennoiseries include pain au chocolat, brioche, palmiers, and chouquettes. Croissants are the second most consumed viennoiserie in France after pain au chocolat.

The croissnats are not automatically eaten everyday by French people but we often buy them by 4 or 6 when we want to please our loved ones at home during the week ends or at work for our colleagues.

How do the French eat their croissants?

Usually in the mornings with a hot beverage such as coffee, tea, or even hot chocolate. The French like to dip their croissants in their coffee or hot chocolate too! Traditionally, croissants are eaten with jam, Nutella or enjoyed plain. But they can be dressed up and decorated or stuffed and deep-fried--the creative possibilities are endless!

There is a trick to eating them though…

It’s no secret that croissants can be a bit messy to eat. Due to the flaky texture, eating a croissant without the proper technique can quickly become a messy ordeal. Typically, croissants are not eaten like a sandwich, rather, they are picked apart bite by bite. This ensures that no crumbs will be on the mouth. Just the fingers!

Where do the French buy their croissants?

You might imagine rows of these golden, crescent-shaped parcels glistening under glass counters in a quaint Parisian bakery. While it is true that every French town has at least one boulangerie, the reality is that it is quite popular among French people to purchase croissants from big European retailers such as Carrefour and Auchan. Often, these croissants and other viennoiseries are sold in boxes or bags in the bread section of a supermarket. It is incredibly common to find frozen croissants as well that can easily be prepared at home and enjoyed fresh out of the oven.
